Surgery Related to Breast Cancer
Most patients will need to complete some sort of biopsy on their breast tissue in order to confirm or deny a diagnosis of cancer. If the tissue is indeed cancerous, there are two major types of surgery to choose from going forward:
- Mastectomy: The surgical removal of one or both breasts. This procedure aims to eliminate all breast tissue, which is particularly useful for patients who are looking to minimize their risk of recurrence as much as possible.
- Breast-conserving surgery: A mastectomy is not for everyone. Many patients find it difficult to imagine life without any natural breast tissue, and they may also be able to achieve excellent results without entirely removing the breast(s).
The decision to undergo a tissue-sparing surgery versus a full mastectomy is entirely up to the patient. Our oncologists highly encourage patients to consider all of their options, and are always happy to provide advice on what type of surgical procedure they feel will yield the best results for the patient in regards to their particular case of breast cancer.
